Her Family History: Kelis’s mother Eveliss is Puerto Rican and Chinese and she is a fashion designer. Kelis’s black father Kenneth was a jazz musician and a Pentecostal minister. Kelis’s father died two days before she inked her former deal with “Virgin” in 1998. When Kelis was 16 and enrolled in the renowned La Guardia School for the Arts, her parents were so worn out from trying to control her, they kicked her out of the house when she was 13.
